February 7: National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
On February 7, the nation will observe the annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This year also marks the
anniversary of the first reports of AIDS in the U.S.
The National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which now guides all federal HIV/AIDS-related efforts and programs, recognizes the disproportionate impact of HIV on African American communities. The strategy promotes HIV testing for at-risk groups and
stresses the importance of getting people who are living with HIV into care.

On Febrary 4, 1927, a decade before the National Cancer Institute (NCI)I was established, Senator Matthew Neely (D)
of West Virginia proposed a bill that would offer a $5 million reward for the discovery of a cure for cancer.
Senator Neely's "reward" bill did not pass, but it was among the first in a series of proposed legislation
that laid the groundwork for the 1937 National Cancer Institute Act.
