University of Washington, circa 1870 We want to a extend a special thank you to Knobbe Martens, Christensen O'Connor Johnson Kindness, Immune Design, Oncothyreon, and Washington State University for sponsoring this unique one-time Washington Life Science History poster. (Photo: University of Washington, circa 1870).

Historically, it is the cutting edge research conducted at the University of Washington (UW) and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHRCR) that has been the technology foundation of more than 140 companies created since 1980.

Imunex Corp. The state's two largest universities, the University of Washington and Washington State University (WSU), have together been awarded more than $27.7 billion in total grant and contract awards since 1980, $1.5 billion in 2015 alone. Since 1980, the Fred Hutch has received more than $6.7 billion in total grants and contracts, with 2015 awards exceeding $325.1 million.

From 1980-2016, more than 100 of the state's life science companies either merged with, or were acquired by another company. Some of the most prominent: Dendreon was acquired by Valeant; Genetic Systems was first acquired by Bristol-Myers, then divested to Sanofi; Hollister-Stier, the oldest name in allergy science, is now Jubilant HollisterStier; ICOS was purchased by Eli Lilly; Immunex was acquired by Amgen; Physio-Control was acquired by Stryker, and ZymoGenetics became part of the Bristol-Myers Squibb, but will fall to history in 2019 upon expiration of its lease which will not be renewed.

The Washington Life Science History poster incorporate all of these events and many more into a one-of-a-kind must have addition for your office wall.
