Summary:
The Seagen Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) Innovation Lab serves as a bridge between Process Development and Manufacturing in order to develop process improvements and test/implement new bioprocessing technologies. We are searching for a summer intern to operate and evaluate an automated cell banking system, as well as perform related cell culture experiments in shake flasks and/or bioreactors. This project will support implementation of this technology at Seagen’s new state of the art manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and self-motivated, collaborative with staff across the organization, and passionately seek innovation.
The Seagen summer internship program is designed to offer opportunities to students who are interested in exploring the biotech industry and building their scientific skills. The intern will work under a practicing professional who will provide guidance and mentorship during the 10- to 12-week internship. This internship will take place at the Seagen – North Creek site in Bothell, WA. This position is paid and is not for academic credit.
Responsibilities:
- With supervision, conduct cell culture experiments from vial thaw through harvest of production shake flasks and/or bioreactors
- Perform cell banking of various internal CHO cell lines
- Operate and help critically evaluate automated cell banking system and compare to manual cell banking
- Operate analytical instruments (such as pH and metabolite analyzers and automated cell counters) and collect data on key cell culture attributes
- Perform data analysis and summarize experimental methods, results, and conclusions in a final report and presentation
- Present regular progress updates at team meetings
- Assist in other bench-scale and pilot-scale bioreactor operations as needed
Qualifications:
- Strong organization, time management and problem-solving skills
- A team player with good communication skills, desire to achieve team and individual goals
- Familiarity with good documentation practices for capturing experimental work using Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN)
- Pursuing undergraduate degree in life sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, or related field
Comfort in a lab setting, including knowledge of general lab safety, PPE, pipetting, and basic lab equipment
- Previous experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique is preferred
- Other work experience (such as retail, service industry, warehouse, or manufacturing) is a plus
Note: This is an onsite, paid internship. This position is open to all students legally authorized to work in the United States. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for internships. While housing is not provided by Seagen, we make every effort to connect fellow interns to arrange for joint housing and ride sharing.
